Abstract

Nominally, high school Sociology has an integral role in education and upbringing of students, young people entering the adult world. The primary focus of this research is to get insight into experience and thinking of high school Sociology teachers–firstly concerning their formation of teaching goals and purposes, and then, via so-called orientation questions about some other issues fundamental for the understanding of the role and significance of the subject in given conditions of high school education. The research was conducted by the method of interview on a sample of 20 high school Sociology teachers from Zagreb. Their intellection of the subject corresponds with the contemporary curriculum approach to teaching planning. The answers given while defining Sociology teaching goals and purposes confirm its potential for multicriterial goal achieving, or competences as a combination of knowledge, skills and opinions. In the teachers' perception, the upbringing role of Sociology has superiority over its scientific contribution to comprehension. The tendency in responses to orientation questions testify about current educational circumstances not contributing to achievement of the previously mentioned integral role of Sociology as a subject. The greatest obstruction for the teachers is the inadequate Sociology teaching programme, which when combined with the state matura generates a teaching to the test effect, or strict focus on the cognitive aspect of learners' achievements. The textbook approach conditions structural uniformity of high school Sociology. A greater number of subjects points out learners’ unwillingness to respond to the subject’s requirements appropriately. The subjects express wishes for a change in terms of different planning and organization of the teaching with greater stake of practical, field and project-based teaching. In other words, there is a strong aspiration for change which could be realized primarily with the production of a new, complete and open document with the purpose of determination of appropriate goals for education and upbringing, suggestion of teaching contents and offer of didactic principles, as well as guidelines for more successful teaching of Sociology.
