Abstract

Attachment to school is a powerful protective factor in both adolescents' mental and physical health. To better understand high school students’ attachment to school, demographic variables such as gender, class and type of school were examined. Alongside, it was explored to which extent do maternal and paternal support toward autonomy and involvement in the learning process predict school attachment. Differences in the level of life satisfaction in regards to gender, class and type of school were also examined. Also, it was analysed how many of the above-mentioned variables predicted life satisfaction of 1559 secondary school students in the Istrian County. Data was collected using the questionnaire "How are you?" (P. Bezinović). The results indicate that students in the first and fourth grades are more attached to school than those in the second and third grades. Gender differences are present in four-year vocational schools, where girls are more attached whereas both girls and boys attending three-year vocational schools are less attached than others. Research shows that boys are more satisfied with life than girls regardless of age or school type. The results also show that age, maternal autonomy support and involvement in the learning process predict school attachment, suggesting mediation of class involvement in relation to paternal autonomy and attachment. In conclusion, maternal and paternal autonomy support and school attachment are equally important predictors of high school life satisfaction in the Istrian County.
