Abstract

This paper deals with the linguistic phenomenon of adjectivized construction of present verbal adverb in the Croatian language which corresponds to the English participial adjective derived from present participle. First, a brief introduction on Croatian adverbs whose stems can be found in the old Croatian participles, namely those found in Old Church Slavonic texts, is given. The development of the old Croatian participles is observed and, later on, their syntactic function in the Croatian standard language, along with semantic and morphological features, is explained. Since the construction concerned shows great resemblance to the Croatian present verbal adverb in terms of morphology, the criteria for distinguishing between the two are proposed. In order to prove the adjectival status of the construction, an analysis is made based on the contrastive analysis of translation. For this purpose, a German original was chosen, followed by an English as well as Croatian translation. The results of the analysis have shown that the adjectivized construction of present verbal adverb has fully acquired the status of an adjective. Moreover, it seems that the construction raises an argument for the revival of the function which was typical for the Croatian present participle in Old Church Slavonic. The impact of the construction's usage on the syntax is still unknown and it should be further investigated within the framework of diachronic syntax.
