Abstract
This paper presents an interdisciplinary approach to politics and ideologies that drive changes in education. From the sociological and pedagogical perspective, critical considereation has been given to the link between education and wider political, economic and cultural contexts and the relationship between ideology and the legitimation of educational content. The theoretical basis of the paper presents the theory of the conservative restoration of the American critical pedagogue Michael Apple. According to the theory, within this alliance of conservative modernization/restoration there are four major elements that operate on contemporary changes in education systems - neoliberalism, neoconservatism, authoritarian populism - religious conservatism and the new middle class managers and professional. Existence of the alliance of conservative modernization in Croatian educational system is tested on the examples of religious education, teaching and history textbooks and the subject of health education. The implementation of these three case studies and their analysis demonstrates that changes in the Croatian educational system are not the result of neo-liberal and neo-conservative alliance as it is highlighted by Apple. Instead, case studies indicate at a divided ideological action in which non-conservative policies supported by the Catholic Church and a certain number of powerful civic organizations led by religious conservatism occupy significant public space.
