Abstract
Defining metalinguistic awareness as the ability to reflect on and manipulate the structural features of a language, this study aimed to provide an insight into multilinguals' metalinguistic awareness in the use of prepositions in the third language production and its relationship with cross-linguistic influence. Language history questionnaire, a translation task and interviews were used to collect the data from nine Croatian university students majoring in English and Italian at University of Zagreb. The study showed that students possess metalinguistic awareness in the use of Italian prepositions which was manifested in their
ability to correct their errors made in an oral task. However, cross-linguistic awareness in the use of function words was rarely identified. From the tendencies found in this study it can be concluded that metalinguistic awareness plays a crucial role in error detection and correction and that higher proficiency may be related to explicit metalinguistic awareness.
