Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyse whether there are any differences between novice and experienced teachers of English as a foreign language in the methods and techniques that they use in their classroom. The sample for the study consisted of 30 teachers – 15 novice and 15 experienced. The instrument used was a questionnaire which consisted of 36 statements that are related to various language teaching methods presented in Diane Larsen-Freeman’s “Techniques and principles in language teaching” (2000). The results showed that there were not many differences between novice and experienced teachers regarding the methods and techniques they used. The results showed that both groups of teachers use various methods and techniques in their classrooms. Novice teachers seemed to use the traditional Grammar Translation method techniques relatively more, while experienced teachers incorporated Cooperative learning and Participatory approach techniques more. Since the teachers who participated in our study did not clearly prefer any method, it might be safe to assume that the eclectic approach seems to be the standard, at least according to the teachers’ reports.
